Hip-Hop music is known to be a genre that is closely linked with negativity in the society. Hip-Hop over the ages have been accompanied with drug abuse; drug trafficking, prostitution, money laundering, and disputes which are commonly referred as ‘Beef.’ Hip-Hop artists’ dispute or rather Beef is something that started way back; a good example is that of Tupac and Notorious BIG which ended gruesomely. The beef is part of the game with the Hip-Hop artist in that it works well for their public relations and marketing. The more beef you get into, the more media coverage you get and the more famous you become. Beside, fame is the best part since the more famous you become, the more money you make in selling your music and landing yourself big concerts deals. However, the beef sometimes turns to be personal and result in personal revenge and lifetime enmity. The latest and the most trending beef is that of son and father, Lill Wayne ‘son’ and Birdman ‘father.’
On April 04th 2012, When Lil Wayne was dropping his new album ‘I am not a human being 2′. Wayne told MTV’s ‘Hip-Hop POV’ that he is the person to go for when you are looking for integrity and loyalty since he came into the game at 11 years with Cash Money Records owned by his ‘father’ Birdman. The father and son relationship between Birdman and Lil Wayne trended for so long turning the two artists into big time household names as well as billionaires. Birdman and Lil Wayne released a duo album in 2006 called ‘Like Father, Like Son’ and what is more Baby ‘Birdman’ has a tattoo of a giant image of Wayne on his left pectoral. However, Lil Wayne’s dissatisfaction with Cash Money became unclear to the public. Press claimed that Wayne felt he is receiving less pay, like various ‘90s-era artists signed with Cash Money before him.
Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97, New York expressed his shock since he never through Lil Wayne and Birdman’s most storied relationship of artist-CEO will ever come to an end. On December 5th, 2012 at a show in Brooklyn, Wayne claimed that the situation would be resolved quickly in his favor and he and Birdman will be out of it soon. When he was speaking Wayne had only released one debut album out of the four-album deal he had earlier on signed with Cash Money. Rumor has it that the release of one album out of four was caused by delays by the Cash Money management.
Birdman and Lil Wayne’s dispute jumped from a frying pan into the fire In January 2015 when Wayne filed a $ 51 million lawsuit against Cash Money. Wayne sued Cash Money for the unpaid advances and joint copyright holdings overall Young Money Entertainment records. This lawsuit led the judge to order for Cash Money mogul to show financial records to the court. Birdman has remained positive and firmly believes he will mend the situation with his son. Wayne, on the other hand, has kept a resilient negative attitude. Well, does this mark an end to the duo’s dispute or has the game just begun?
